Custom Sign Board Printing

Printed Today produces custom sign board printing for businesses, contractors, retailers, event organisers and property professionals across the UK. This is a single configurable product covering four board materials, any width and height, any quantity, single- or double-sided UV printing and five delivery speeds. Instead of choosing from a fixed size list, you specify what the sign needs to do and we build it to those requirements.

The advantage of ordering printed sign boards through one configurable product is straightforward: you compare materials side by side before committing, rather than guessing which product page matches your job. After all, a shop fascia, a scaffold hoarding, an exhibition graphic and a reception display all need different boards. This page helps you identify which one, then produces it to your exact specification.

Printed Signs and Sign Boards Made to Your Requirements

Sign board printing at Printed Today is built around three variables that determine everything else: where the sign will live, how long it needs to last, and how it will be fixed. Once you have answered those three, the material, thickness, print method and finishing all follow logically.

Every board is direct UV printed. In other words, the ink cures instantly under ultraviolet light as it is applied, bonding to the board surface rather than sitting on top of it. For printed signs this means better scratch resistance, no drying time before finishing, sharper edge definition on small text, and significantly better outdoor colour stability than solvent alternatives. Crucially, it also lets us print both faces of a single sheet — which is why our double-sided boards are the same thickness as our single-sided ones.

Choose Your Sign Board Material

Material selection is the most consequential decision in custom sign printing, and it is almost entirely determined by environment and lifespan. Each of our four materials occupies a distinct position on the cost-versus-durability scale. Read the four descriptions below, then check the comparison table to confirm your choice.

Foamex Board Printing — 5 mm Rigid PVC

Foamex board printing is our most versatile option and the default choice for the majority of orders. Foamex is rigid expanded PVC — a closed-cell plastic sheet with a smooth, matt-white, non-porous surface. However, it is important to understand that Foamex is not soft foam-core board: rather, it is a solid, self-supporting plastic panel that will not delaminate, absorb water or crush under fingertip pressure.

That smooth surface is what makes Foamex printing so sharp. Because there is no fluting, no texture and no paper layer, UV ink sits perfectly flat. As a result, printed foam board in Foamex reproduces fine text, gradients, photographic images and precise brand colours better than any other board in our range apart from ACP.

At 5 mm, this board is rigid enough to stand unsupported in a frame, light enough to mount with adhesive pads on plasterboard, and durable enough for short-to-medium-term outdoor use. Consequently, Foamex signs are the standard choice for shop signage, POS displays, wayfinding, exhibition panels, menu boards, safety notices and indoor branding. For outdoor installations, add lamination to extend UV and moisture resistance.

Standard sizes are available directly: A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 Foamex boards, or PVC foam board in the same sizes.

Correx Printing — 4 mm Fluted Polypropylene

Correx printing is the economical choice, and by a considerable margin — Correx is typically less than half the sq-ft cost of Foamex and roughly a quarter the cost of ACP. In construction, Correx is fluted polypropylene: two thin plastic skins separated by vertical internal ribs, giving the same principle as cardboard but in a fully waterproof plastic.

That structure is Correx’s defining property. It is extremely light, entirely unaffected by rain, and cheap enough to deploy in volume and replace when a campaign ends. Accordingly, Correx signs dominate estate agency boards, construction and contractor notices, temporary directional signage, event and festival signs, and roadside campaign boards.

The trade-off is surface and rigidity. Since the flutes are faintly visible under raking light, Correx board printing suits bold, high-contrast, distance-read designs rather than fine detail or photographic work. Furthermore, it is the least rigid board we offer. In exposed positions, therefore, fix a Correx sign board at all four corners rather than the top edge alone.

Standard sizes are available directly: A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 Correx boards.

Dibond Printing and Aluminium Composite Signs — 3 mm ACP

Dibond printing is the premium end of our range and the only material we recommend without qualification for permanent exterior installation. Aluminium composite panel — sold as ACP, ACM or under the Dibond brand — is a sandwich construction: two skins of genuine aluminium bonded to a solid polyethylene core.

Structurally, the result behaves like sheet metal while weighing a fraction as much. Aluminium Dibond will not warp in heat, will not sag over long spans, will not absorb moisture and will not degrade in UV. A Dibond board fixed to a shopfront will therefore still be flat and colour-accurate years later. For this reason, Dibond signs are the standard for shop fascias, building signage, estate development boards, industrial and site identification, and any sign where replacement is expensive or disruptive.

Beyond durability, the aluminium face also gives the finest surface in our range. Aluminium composite board printing holds a genuinely premium finish — the flattest substrate, the sharpest detail, and the closest colour reproduction available on a rigid board. Admittedly, it costs more per square foot than Foamex or Correx. Yet for permanent signage it is almost always the cheaper option measured over the sign’s life.

Order standard sizes directly: A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 Dibond panels, or the equivalent aluminium composite panels.

KT Soft Board Printing — 5 mm Lightweight Display Board

Soft board printing is our lightweight indoor option, best understood as the specialist choice rather than a cheaper Foamex. KT board is a foam core faced with smooth paper or film liners — very light, very rigid for its weight, and the easiest board in our range to cut, carry and mount by hand.

Because of those properties, lightweight display board printing is ideal for exhibition and trade show graphics that travel between venues, presentation and conference boards, retail POS that changes weekly, mounted photography and artwork, event and wedding welcome boards, and life-size standees.

The constraint, however, is unambiguous: KT Soft Board is indoor only. The paper or film face and foam core will absorb moisture, warp and delaminate outdoors. So if there is any chance the sign will be exposed to weather, choose Foamex or Correx instead — we would rather redirect you now than replace a warped board later.

Standard sizes are available directly: A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 soft boards.

Custom Printed Signs in Any Size and Quantity

There is no fixed size list. Simply enter your required width and height and we cut the board to those dimensions — an exact fit for an existing frame, a run of boards matching an installed sign, or a one-off panel for an awkward space. Boards are supplied as precision square-cut rectangles and squares. Although contour and shape cutting is not currently available, all four materials trim easily on site with a sharp knife or fine-tooth blade if you need to adjust the outline yourself.

Quantity is equally unrestricted. Order a single board or several hundred — there is no minimum. Moreover, because pricing runs on total square footage, larger orders move into lower per-sq-ft bands automatically.

These are the sizes we produce most often, given as a reference for anyone unsure where to start.

8 × 4 ft (full sheet) 2438 × 1219 96 × 48 32.00

Single-Sided and Double-Sided Sign Printing

Print sides is the second configuration choice, and it is decided by one question: can the sign be seen from behind? Because we UV print directly onto both faces of a single sheet rather than bonding two boards together, a double-sided board is identical in thickness and weight to a single-sided one — it simply carries a second image.

  • Single-sided printing — the standard option, and correct wherever the reverse face will never be visible. Suitable for wall-mounted signage, shop windows, boards fixed to hoardings or fences, panels in frames and any sign with its back against a structure. It is the most cost-effective choice, and there is no quality difference in the printed face.
  • Double-sided printing — essential wherever the sign is approached from two directions. Ideal for hanging and projecting signs, freestanding boards in open floor space, roadside and forecourt signage seen by traffic in both directions, directional boards in corridors and aisles, and window graphics read from inside and out. Additionally, the second face can carry a completely different design at no extra cost, which makes double-sided useful for directional signs pointing opposite ways.

Finishing Options for Printed Sign Boards

Finishing determines how the board is fixed. Specifying it correctly at order stage saves drilling on site — where a slipped bit through a printed face is expensive to fix. Choose based on the surface you are mounting to and the wind exposure at the location.

Eyelets

Eyelets are reinforced metal rings pressed into the board to create clean, tear-resistant tie-off points. Choose eyelets when the sign will be hung, tied or tensioned rather than screwed flat to a solid surface.

  • No eyelets — for boards fixed with adhesive pads, slotted into frames, or screwed directly through the face. Also the right choice for interior displays where visible hardware would detract from the finish.
  • Top only — for signs suspended from hooks, rails, scaffold bars, cable ties or rope. Suits hanging retail signage, event boards and temporary directional signs where the board hangs freely and is not wind-exposed.
  • Four corners — the most secure option, and the one to choose for anything outdoors. Four-point fixing lets you tension the board evenly against railings, Heras fencing, barriers and mesh, which stops the corners lifting and flapping in wind. Standard for construction, estate agency and roadside signage.

Drill Holes

Drill holes are clean pre-drilled fixing points for screw or bolt mounting. Choose drill holes when the board needs to sit flat and square against a solid surface with no movement.

  • No drill holes — for adhesive mounting, frame-mounted boards, freestanding displays and any application where you would rather position the fixings yourself after seeing the board in situ.
  • Top only — for boards hung from two fixings on a wall, fence or timber batten. Quick to install, and sufficient for smaller indoor and sheltered signs where the board is not wind-loaded.
  • Four corners — for permanent installation on brick, timber, plasterboard, metal frames or posts. Four-point screw fixing holds the board flat and prevents twisting or corner lift. Consequently, it is the correct specification for larger boards and any exterior fascia or hoarding.

Lamination

Lamination is a clear protective film applied over the printed face. It is optional on every material, and worth adding wherever the sign will be handled, cleaned or weather-exposed.

  • No lamination — the standard specification, and entirely adequate for short-term indoor displays and any sign that will not be handled. UV ink is already durable on its own; lamination is therefore added protection rather than a fix for weak ink.
  • Matt lamination — a non-reflective finish that eliminates glare from overhead lighting, spotlights and windows. Choose matt wherever the sign must stay readable under bright or variable light: retail interiors, exhibition halls, information and menu boards, and any text-heavy design. It gives a more understated, professional appearance and hides fingerprints well.
  • Gloss lamination — a reflective finish that deepens colour saturation and increases contrast, making images and brand colours noticeably more vivid. Choose gloss for promotional and point-of-sale displays where the sign needs to compete for attention. Similarly, on outdoor boards the additional moisture and UV barrier extends usable life.

Sign Board Printing Prices

Pricing is calculated on total area rather than a fixed price per board, so cost scales with the size of the job and larger orders benefit automatically. Importantly, the sq-ft rate is set by the total square footage of the order, not the size of an individual board. Ten A2 boards are therefore priced as 26.9 sq ft, which lands in a considerably cheaper band than a single A2 at 2.69 sq ft.

Upload Your Artwork or Request Design Support

Artwork status is a configuration option at checkout, not an obstacle to ordering. Tell us where you are and we will work from there — in short, you do not need finished files to place an order.

  • Print-ready artwork — upload during checkout or email files to [email protected]. Our pre-press team opens and checks every file manually before production, verifying dimensions, resolution, bleed and colour mode. If anything needs adjusting we contact you before printing, not after.
  • Artwork to follow — place the order to secure your production slot and send files afterwards. Because your turnaround clock starts from artwork approval, this keeps the order moving while you finalise the design.
  • Existing design needing adjustment — send what you have. We routinely rescale artwork to new dimensions, add bleed, convert colour modes, correct resolution issues and adapt a single design across multiple board sizes.
  • Design support required — our in-house design team will produce your artwork free of charge. Send a brief with your text, logo, brand colours, any images and a reference or two showing the style you want. Naturally, the more specific the brief, the closer the first draft.

For complex briefs, brand development or artwork you want to reuse across other materials, our professional design service supplies finished files in editable formats (AI, PSD, PDF) so the design remains yours to adapt.

Artwork Specifications

Specification Requirement Why it matters
File formats PDF, AI, EPS, PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF Vector formats (PDF, AI, EPS) give the sharpest results at large sizes
Resolution 150–300 dpi at final print size Below 150 dpi, text edges soften and images lose definition
Bleed 3–5 mm on all sides Prevents unprinted white edges after trimming
Colour mode CMYK preferred, RGB accepted CMYK matches the print process, so colours reproduce as intended
Fonts Outlined or converted to curves Guarantees typefaces render exactly as designed on our systems
Dimensions Match your ordered board size Avoids scaling, which distorts proportions and softens detail
Large files Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer For files over 64 MB that will not send by email

Fast Sign Printing — Choose Your Delivery Service

Each turnaround below begins from artwork approval, not order placement. For that reason, our pre-press team reviews files promptly, so nothing sits waiting. Choose the service that matches your deadline.

  • Standard — 5 working days — the base rate, and the right choice for planned signage, scheduled campaigns and refits with a known install date. Same production standard and same quality control as every express order.
  • 72-hour — three working days from approval. This is the sensible middle option when a deadline is close but not critical, and the most cost-effective of the express services.
  • 48-hour — two working days from approval. Suits mid-week deadlines, replacement boards and short-notice event signage where standard delivery would arrive too late.
  • 24-hour — printed and dispatched the same working day for next-working-day delivery to mainland UK. Available on all order sizes, although a higher rate applies above 81 sq ft to reflect the production capacity reserved.
  • Same-day collection — collect from Bolton or London on the day of ordering, for orders up to 64 sq ft. Ideal for genuine emergencies where courier transit is the constraint. Since daily availability depends on current production load, confirm on the price calculator when configuring your order.

  3. Choose your quantity — from one board upwards, with rates adjusting automatically by total area.
  4. Choose single- or double-sided printing.
  5. Select lamination — none, matt or gloss.
  6. Select finishing — eyelets and drill holes, top or four corners.
  7. Choose your delivery service — standard through to same-day collection.

Why Order Printed Sign Boards From Printed Today

All four materials are produced in-house at our UK facility. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is printed overseas, which is precisely what allows us to hold 24-hour turnarounds reliably and offer same-day collection at all. Our print technicians check colour accuracy and cutting precision on every order before it is packed. Boards are then dispatched in protective packaging designed to prevent corner damage and surface scratching in transit, with full tracking supplied.

Because we run all four materials on the same UV equipment, we have no incentive to steer you toward a more expensive board than your job requires. If Correx will do what you need, we will tell you so.
